Secure Data, a member of the JSE-listed ERP.com Group, and the southern African distributor for Trend security software, today announced the results of a comparative study featuring Trend Micro InterScan Web Security Suite against similar products and software from competitors.
The study, commissioned by Trend Micro and managed by VeriTest, a division of Lionbridge Technologies, demonstrates the capabilities of InterScan Web Security Suite in a realistic network environment setting. Results suggest that InterScan Web Security Suite is a breakthrough in Web security performance.
The goal of the VeriTest study was to measure and compare the Web access performance among anti-virus products while filtering HTTP and FTP traffic to several client systems simultaneously (up to 120 clients). InterScan Web Security Suite was tested against Symantec Web Security and McAfee WebShield e1000 appliance. The test also included a system with no antivirus scanning, providing a baseline against which to compare performance.
In throughput comparisons, Trend Micro InterScan Web Security Suite generated a peak throughput of approximately 4.2 million bytes per second, handling up to seven times the data per second compared to competitors' products. Results indicate that InterScan Web Security Suite helps meet the demands of both a feature-rich Internet and a high capacity of users, with the scalability to provide a lower cost of ownership.
"We found that, in our test configurations, the Trend Micro InterScan Web Security Suite 1.0 provided the best overall HTTP filtering performance compared to the McAfee Web Shield e1000 appliance and the Symantec Web Security 3.0 products," stated VeriTest in the report. "Trend Micro InterScan Web Security Suite outperforms both the McAfee Web Shield e1000 appliance and Symantec Web Security when comparing the throughput generated by each device in our test configurations."
Furthermore, InterScan Web Security Suite yielded the lowest latency of the three products tested (running 120 clients). Latency measures the time it takes for a user to access Web page content.
InterScan Web Security Suite is a gateway anti-virus solution that focuses on HTTP and FTP traffic protocols, designed to handle the daily traffic burdens of large organisations with minimal disruption to Web users. The software, introduced this year from gateway anti-virus market leader Trend Micro, scans for viruses and other malicious code at the HTTP/FTP gateway, protecting standalone HTTP servers and ICAP protocol Web caching servers. According to IDC (IDC, 2003), Trend Micro has led the gateway anti-virus market share for the last four consecutive years.
