Trend Micro introduces newest addition to Internet gateway security portfolio

Johannesburg, 17 Aug 2006

SecureData, a member of the JSE-listed ERP.com Group and the southern African distributor for Trend Micro security software, today announced the latter's InterScan Gateway Security Appliance, the latest addition to its portfolio of gateway security solutions that provide choice to customers, independent of form factor or business size.

Trend Micro InterScan Gateway Security Appliance is designed for mid-sized organisations looking for an easy to install, easy to maintain content security solution. While protecting corporate and personal data, the appliance supports employee productivity and it includes an anti-bot functionality to help prevent internal PCs from becoming zombies.

This new all-in-one secure content management appliance incorporates anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-spam, content filtering and URL filtering into one seamless unit. Unlike UTM (unified threat management) appliances, InterScan Gateway Security Appliance sits behind a customer's existing firewall/VPN solution adding an additional layer to their Internet gateway security.

Mid-sized businesses require flexible content security solutions that can support an often complex and distributed network. InterScan Gateway Security Appliance provides both ease-of-use and flexibility with simplified installation through pre-configured software and hardware. Also comprising heuristic detection technology and automated, remote cleanup capabilities, InterScan Gateway Security Appliance enables organisations to enforce their gateway content security with a single product.

Trend Micro originally pioneered gateway-based anti-virus in 1996, and according to research by independent analyst firm, IDC, has since this time continually held the anti-virus gateway market leadership position (source: IDC, Worldwide Anti-virus 2005 - 2009 Forecast and Analysis, December 2005). Trend Micro InterScan VirusWall was the first gateway anti-virus product on the market. It is available on a choice of platforms including Linux, and following recent product enhancements Trend Micro has reintroduced the award-winning solution now with integrated anti-spyware and anti-bot protection.

Gateway security protection has proven to be one of the most effective and important solutions in the battle against cyber crime. By blocking malicious malware at the Internet gateway, businesses can reduce the risk of infiltration and infection early on, before the malware reaches the desktop.

"Trend Micro maintains a customer focused business environment combined with ongoing threat research, in order to provide comprehensive, reliable security for our customers' digital information and assets," commented Steve Quane, general manager Trend Micro small and medium-sized business operations. "By developing different types of solutions and services for different sized organisations, Trend Micro solutions continue to protect as customers' businesses grow."

Through a comprehensive portfolio of gateway-based solutions, Trend Micro offers customers a choice of services, hardware and software solutions dependant on their business need and business size.

For medium-sized organisations, Trend Micro has launched a choice of solutions, dependant on infrastructure and business need. Trend Micro has levered its expertise in enterprise security and small business security to develop new hardware, software and services that fit appropriately into the evolving mid-market infrastructure.

In May 2006 Trend Micro launched the Trend Micro e-mail Security Service. Aimed at the small and medium-sized business, E-mail Security Service is a hosted e-mail protection service that provides a cost-effective alternative to managing onsite hardware or software at the messaging gateway.

Smaller organisations are supported through Trend Micro worry-free solutions, providing smaller businesses with easy to install, easy to deploy and maintain, worry-free security protection. The single solution offers a combination of features including anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-spam.

"The option of a security appliance at the gateway can yield significant savings for SMB customers from a management perspective," observed Chris Christiansen, vice-president, Security Products & Services for IDC. "Having a single cohesive security architecture, such as that offered by Trend Micro, to handle multiple types of threats, provides simplified means to enable security policies with fewer resources."

Trend Micro has also continued the development of its enterprise business solutions to provide advanced security with the flexibility, manageability and scalability required by large companies.

Enterprise solutions are designed to help businesses enforce security policies, protect against infections and enable IT departments to manage their solutions with minimal administration. Internet gateway solutions for the large enterprise include hardware and software solutions in multiple form-factors. Solutions include the InterScan family of products, including the recently launched InterScan Web Security Appliance, InterScan Web Security Suite and InterScan Messaging Security Suite. Additionally, Trend Micro Spam Prevention Solution helps block unsolicited and inappropriate e-mail through solid spam detection technology.
