SecureData, an ERP.com company and the exclusive sub-Saharan distributors of Trend Micro Inc, the leading provider of antivirus solutions for the Internet gateway, and Network Appliance, Inc, a leading provider of network-attached data access and content delivery solutions, today announced the beta release of an iCAP-enabled version of Trend Micro's flagship InterScan VirusWall antivirus solution, InterScan VirusWall iCAP Edition for Network Appliance NetCache content delivery appliances.
Developed for the enterprise and service provider markets, InterScan VirusWall iCAP Edition for Network Appliance solutions is the first antivirus solution to use the Internet Content Adaptation Protocol (iCAP), an open standard for communication among Web content delivery systems that enables enhanced services at the Internet edge.
Trend Micro and Network Appliance worked together closely to develop scalable, high-performance virus protection for NetCache appliances at the Internet gateway, taking advantage of the iCAP standard. The tightly integrated solution offers faster Internet access, improved network performance and enhanced Internet security for organizations. By efficiently scanning HTTP traffic for viruses and other malicious code, InterScan VirusWall iCAP Edition gives administrators the tools they need to protect their organizations from viruses hidden in Web traffic and in email transmitted via Web-based email accounts, without the performance impact typically associated with HTTP scanning.
"The Network Appliance and Trend Micro solution gives customers security at the Internet gateway without the bandwidth congestion, delays, and bottlenecks associated with the repeated scanning of Web pages," says Wayne Biehn, Sales Director of SecureData. "InterScan VirusWall iCAP Edition helps enable organizations engaging in e-commerce and Internet communications to enforce secure access policies, prevent viruses from entering their networks and service offerings, and offer virus-free content as a service."
InterScan VirusWall iCAP Edition works by directing incoming HTTP traffic away from the cache to another platform, where it is scanned for viruses and other malicious content. The cleaned content is then returned to the Network Appliance NetCache appliance, where it can be accessed by other users without additional scanning. This solution allows speedy access to safe content and reduces demands on bandwidth.
InterScan VirusWall protects against the well-known threats of computer viruses, Trojans and worms, as well as other active dangers to network security, such as malicious ActiveX controls and JavaScript embedded in Web pages. This type of harmful code can steal, delete or modify information, compromising corporate security and resulting in lost productivity through "downtime.''
"Although it is essential that virus scanning be part of any IT infrastructure, it can drastically reduce network performance and increase infrastructure costs," noted Amit Pandey, director of marketing for the content delivery business unit at Network Appliance. "The Trend Micro and Network Appliance solution offers customers enterprise-class virus scanning functionality without the added strain on corporate network resources by storing virus-free content at the edge of the network, closest to the end user."

InterScan VirusWall
Trend Micro's InterScan VirusWall is the company's second-generation, high-performance antivirus solution, offering real-time protection at the Internet gateway. InterScan VirusWall established the Internet gateway antivirus category by being first to market in 1996 and quickly capturing PC Magazine's Editor's Choice Award that same year. Numerous awards have followed, including 1999 Editor's Choice picks in both Network Week and Network Computing, affirming Trend Micro's continuing technological leadership in the category. In September 2000, an IDC Bulletin showed Trend Micro to have a 54% share of the Internet gateway antivirus market, attesting to Trend Micro's position as the leading provider of antivirus solutions for the Internet gateway.
iCAP
iCAP is a simple yet powerful open protocol that enables communication between edge content devices (i.e. Web caches) and application servers that deliver content to Internet access devices. The standard allows enterprises, content providers and ISPs to deliver seamless e-services such as virus scanning, content filtering, targeted advertising and language translation from any Internet access device. Supported by leading Internet infrastructure companies, content delivery service providers and application developers, the first draft of the protocol was completed in March 2000. The Internet community is now prototyping the first e-service offerings using iCAP. More information on this initiative is available from the iCAP Web site at www.i-cap.org.
