Trend Micro protects small businesses

Trend Micro has introduced the latest version of Worry-Free Solutions. It protects against malicious, emerging Web threats through an anti-spyware engine, reports SMB Edge.

The latest edition has been designed to meet security challenges faced by small organisations, by providing a security product with single-step installation and deployment, plus proactive defences against traditional and emerging malware.

New functionality allows customers to remain protected against threats such as spyware, rootkits, bots and . Other improvements include enhanced anti-spam functionality and new server-side quarantine features.

Attackers prey on Word 2000 flaw

Attackers are exploiting an unpatched vulnerability in Microsoft Word 2000, to remotely hijack systems, reports WhatPC.

Microsoft is warning users that the exploit could be delivered as an e-mail attachment or file transfer. Symantec spotted an attack where the infected document installed malware after it was opened. The vulnerability does not affect other versions of Word or Office.

It has been given an 'extremely critical' rating, and Microsoft is offering free support to users who have fallen victim to the attacks.

94% of all e-mail in December was spam

According to Postini, 94% of all e-mail sent out in December was spam. The report says the rise of bot-nets and image spam is causing e-mail systems at companies to shut down.

In 2006, the volume of spam increased 144% by Postini's measure. The company attributes the surge in spam to PCs that have been commandeered by criminals without the knowledge of their owners.

"This continued rise in spam levels is threatening the viability of e-mail for businesses that are not properly protected, and is sapping the productivity of hundreds of millions of workers around the world," said Daniel Druker, executive VP of marketing at Postini.
