Trend Micro provides industry's first Internet gateway virus scanning solution for Sendmail

Johannesburg, 23 Mar 2001

InterScan VirusWall's tight integration with Sendmail's Content Management API simplifies deployment, reduces management costs and delivers better performance

SecureData, an ERP.com company and the exclusive African distributors of Trend Micro, a leading provider of antivirus solutions for the gateway, today announced shipment of InterScan VirusWall 3.6 Sendmail Edition, the company's Solaris-based Internet gateway virus designed specifically for Sendmail Internet messaging solutions. With this announcement the two companies have also entered into a worldwide reseller agreement that will enable Sendmail, Inc. to resell Trend Micro's InterScan VirusWall and InterScan eManager content filtering plug-in through Sendmail's direct sales force.

Sendmail provides the standards-based messaging solutions that are responsible for routing the majority of mail across the Internet. Trend Micro's market-leading InterScan VirusWall provides high-performance protection against viruses like the recent Anna Kournikova email worm at the Internet email server, before they have a chance to reach the desktop and spread within or outside of an organisation. InterScan VirusWall 3.6 is tightly integrated with Sendmail and is designed to provide enterprises and service providers with a high performance security solution that is easy to deploy and manage.

"I signed up to be a Trend Micro beta customer as soon as I heard that they were developing an antivirus solution specifically for Sendmail's messaging solutions," says Ed Graham, Manager of Information Technology at Tenor Networks, Inc. "The minute I installed it I was very impressed. It started blocking viruses immediately. The day the Anna Kournikova virus spread, we were hit 35 times, but it was blocked at the server every time. From an administrator's point of view, the products ease-of-use, high performance, notification, and auto-update features are top notch. InterScan VirusWall Sendmail Edition is a must have for any IT manager running Sendmail on a Unix platform."

Email has become the world's most popular Internet application as well as an indispensable communication tool for both corporate and individual users at work and at home. Unfortunately, the open standards that have enabled seamless email communications between all users across the globe have also made this technology susceptible to computer hacker and virus writer attacks. The slew of virus outbreaks in the year 2000 alone demonstrates how damaging and fast-spreading email-based virus attacks can be across today's networked world.

"Scanning for viruses at the Internet gateway is the most effective way to deal with the threat of Internet-borne virus outbreaks," said Wayne Biehn, SecureData Sales Director. "The integration of InterScan VirusWall with Sendmail's messaging solutions provides our corporate and service provider customers with a cost effective, reliable, and easy to use method to immediately identify and eliminate viruses before they enter internal mail systems and get routed to end users."

"InterScan VirusWall for Sendmail is the culmination of months of joint development efforts by both Sendmail, Inc. and Trend Micro," said Greg Olson, executive vice president of Business Development, Sendmail, Inc. "This hard work has paid off, and we are pleased to provide corporations and service providers with this efficient and scalable approach to Internet email virus protection."

InterScan VirusWall 3.6 for Sendmail

Trend Micro's InterScan VirusWall Sendmail Edition provides high-performance Internet gateway protection against viruses and potentially harmful ActiveX and Java code in SMTP traffic. Virus scanning occurs at the Internet email server, so it is transparent to end-users.

Flexible configuration allows administrators to select real-time, pre-scheduled or manual scanning. All routine tasks - such as web-based updates, reporting and alerting may also be automatically scheduled at the administrator's convenience. Customisable virus warning messages may be sent automatically to file recipients, senders and/or the administrator. A comprehensive activity log maintains the details of each infected file or attempted security violation. Central management is handled through a web-based console, the Trend Virus Control System (Trend VCS), enabling administrators to enforce Internet content security policy from a local or remote location.
