Johannesburg-based SatelliteSafe, developer of the world's first satellite delivery anti-virus protection, has announced a marketing partnership with Nasdaq-listed Trend Micro, the network anti-virus and Internet content security solution company, for high-speed delivery of virus protection and the filtering of undesirable content.
In terms of the agreement, Trend Micro has given SatelliteSafe access to its TrendLabs virus update server, ensuring it has secure and instantaneous access to virus updates as they are generated. SatelliteSafe then beams these updates to its corporate clients within minutes, avoiding any delays which may occur through the Internet.
The Internet inherently suffers from bandwidth problems, causing severe delays to the delivery of virus and content filtering updates. This was vividly illustrated with the rapid and uncontrolled spread of the Anna Kournikova virus.
"Working with SatelliteSafe will enable us to provide our customers with an alternative means of obtaining virus updates in time of need, such as during the ILOVEYOU virus outbreak," says Raimund Genes, European VP of sales and marketing, Trend Micro. "Satellite technology enhances the speed and accuracy at which updates can be delivered."
"The Internet can get overloaded, causing severe delays in delivery at a time when it is critical to have updates in place to minimise or avoid any security exposure," comments Ian Melamed, chief technology officer at SatelliteSafe. "Delivering updates via satellite eliminates these delays." Under the agreement, SatelliteSafe makes the service available to all Trend Micro customers in Europe, including ISPs and ASPs. A typical cost of the service for 1 000 users will be 9,00 sterling per user per year.
SatelliteSafe will support Trend Micro customers who have Trend Virus Control System (TVCS), InterScan VirusWall or e-Manager.
Once a basic anti-virus package has been installed in a network, SatelliteSafe can manage all necessary updates and deliver the protection via satellite in seconds.
The fully automated system:
Newly discovered e-mail viruses are detected, blocked and deleted through the use of the customer's existing e-mail filtering programs.
Detection strings that identify and block malicious code are immediately broadcast as they are discovered for integration into the e-mail filtering programs.
Anti-virus updates are sent out as soon as anti-virus vendors release them. From a single broadcast, SatelliteSafe can automatically distribute the Anti-virus updates to all the LAN- or WAN-connected servers and workstations in a company, providing the fastest anti-virus software distribution possible.
