Trend Micro to offer comprehensive virus protection to Microsoft Exchange 5.5 customers

With ScanMail for Exchange customers can choose the Antivirus scanning technology that best meets their network needs without compromising Security.
Johannesburg, 15 Nov 2000

SecureData, an ERP.com company and the exclusive sub-Saharan distributors of Trend Micro today announced that in response to demand, Trend Micro, a leading provider of enterprise antivirus and content for the age, will be supporting several different API protocol support options in its award-winning ScanMail for Exchange antivirus solution to provide security from viruses. These options will enable customers to utilise the API support option of ScanMail that best meets the needs of their individual messaging requirements. These options can be used by organisations until they migrate to Exchange 2000.

The API options of ScanMail utilise the Messaging Application Program Interface (MAPI) and either the Anti-Virus Application Program Interface (AV API) provided by Microsoft or the Extensible Storage Engine Application Program Interface (ESE API) also known as the "backup" API. Each work with Microsoft Exchange 5.5 and are designed to safeguard corporate networks from email-borne viruses at the Exchange server, before they have a chance to reach the user's desktop, infect and spread, or shut down the mail server.

"Trend Micro is taking this step in response to customer demand. By committing to support these different implementations of ScanMail for Exchange, Trend Micro is enabling organisations to select the solution that best fits their particular environment and demonstrating its dedication to securing the Exchange platform," says Wayne Biehn, Sales Director, SecureData. "Regardless of the API protocol option implemented, customers can be assured that their Exchange antivirus solution will be backed by the world-class service and support they've come to expect from Trend Micro."

ScanMail Exchange v3.51 Option (AV API and MAPI implementations in one package)

(AV API) Utilising the new Microsoft Exchange Anti-Virus API (AV API), ScanMail version 3.51 scans all attachments of inbound and outbound messages the moment they get to the Information Store. By following the standard Microsoft Exchange AV API, ScanMail cleans email attachments without leaving traces of virus infestation In addition, the AV API supports single-instance scanning for enhanced performance benefits.

(MAPI) - The MAPI implementation of ScanMail is included in version 3.51 to provide customers with real-time, manual, and scheduled scanning capabilities. MAPI can be run separately or in parallel with the AV API version of ScanMail for Exchange for a comprehensive scanning solution. Using the MAPI protocol, as new messages are received at the Information Store's mailboxes, Exchange notifies ScanMail that new email has been delivered. ScanMail then checks to see whether or not these messages contain attachments, and if any are present, scans them and cleans any infected files. MAPI also scans for malicious content within the message body of an email.

ScanMail Exchange v3.6 Option (ESE "Backup" API and MAPI implementations in one package)

(ESE API) Using the Microsoft ESE or "Backup" API, ScanMail 3.6 for Exchange accesses and scans all email messages and attachments as they enter or exit the Exchange server at the Information store level, before they are delivered to the user's in-box. The ESE API protocol also supports single-instance scanning for enhanced performance benefits. The MAPI implementation of ScanMail is also included in version 3.6 and provides customers with manual and scheduled scanning capabilities.

Content Filtering for Emergency Message Blocking The MAPI and AV API options of ScanMail for Exchange currently support ScanMail eManager, an optional email content-filtering plug-in for ScanMail for Exchange

  • eManager can be used to block potentially malicious email based on message content, enabling administrators to quickly and easily block the latest malicious code even before an emergency update is available. eManager also manages spam, message content and mail delivery to Microsoft Exchange servers.

  • The ESE API option will support eManager in the next release, which Trend Micro anticipates shipping in Q1, 2001
