SecureData, a member of the JSE-listed ERP.com Group, and the southern African distributor for Trend Micro security software, today announced the latter's new version of its smartphone security solution.
This latest release includes new security features within the award-winning Trend Micro Mobile Security.
Trend Micro Mobile Security 3.0 for Symbian-based S60 protects all Nokia E series devices, including the new Nokia E61i, Nokia E65 and Nokia E90 Communicator against hackers and intrusions while improving on the previously available mobile malicious code protection.
According to independent analyst firm IDC, converged mobile device shipments surged 42% to reach 80.5 million units in 2006 (source: IDC Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, February 2007).
Given the growth in smartphone adoption, increasing mobile computing power, faster 3G mobile download speeds and wider availability of WiFi, the possibility of a more serious threat is increasing.
Until now, threats to smartphone devices have been proof-of-concept attacks, limited by weak propagation methods and a modest target device population. However, according to Bob Egan, Chief Analyst at TowerGroup, these sorts of devices will increasingly be the target of fraud and identity theft (TowerGroup: "Fraud, Virus and ID Theft: Mobile Malware Stands to Create a New Beginning", January 2007).
Trend Micro continues to innovate and improve on delivering solutions that prevent would-be attackers getting inside the device and causing damage or disruption - whether through malicious code or hacking attempts. Trend Micro Mobile Security 3.0 helps "on-the-go" consumers and professionals protect themselves from malicious attackers attempting to acquire sensitive information by surreptitious means. With current devices connecting to multiple networks including the mobile operator data network, WiFi, and Bluetooth, security on the handset helps prevent infection to or from a connected network.
"The Trend Micro Mobile security solution, now available for S60-based mobile devices, such as Nokia E61i, Nokia E65 and Nokia E90 Communicator, is an example of a converged security solution extending corporate IT security from fixed computing to mobile professionals. Protecting mobile business customers is now no different from protecting desk bound employees," commented Mika Laitinen, director, Nokia, Enterprise Solutions.
"Faster data download speeds in mobile devices deliver cool new applications, Web access and push e-mail - all of which aid the 'on-the-go' lifestyle," added Raimund Genes, general manager of Trend Micro Incubation segment. "However, the expanding popularity of smartphones is likely to attract malicious attackers looking to make a fraudulent profit. While the threats we have so far identified have been limited in their abilities, Trend Micro is committed to improving our technology to stay one step ahead of the bad guys. Trend Micro Mobile Security 3.0 delivers on this commitment."
Trend Micro Mobile Security 3.0 is designed for maximum ease-of-use, providing users a simple interface intended to provide maximum security with minimal impact on the user and device. Enterprises can deploy and update Trend Micro Mobile Security through existing device management applications.
Trend Micro Mobile Security 3.0 for Symbian OS 9.1/S60 3rd Edition supports a variety of Nokia devices including the Nokia E50, E60, E61, E61i, E62, E65, E70, E90, N95, N93, N93i, N92, N91, N80, N76, N75, N73, N71, 3250, 5500, 6290.
