Trend Micro unveils best of breed anti-virus solution for Microsoft Exchange 2000

Johannesburg, 24 Oct 2000

SecureData, and ERP.com company and the exclusive distributors of Trend Micro Inc, a leading provider of enterprise antivirus and content for the age, today announced the unveiling of Trend Micro's Exchange 2000 antivirus solution, ScanMail version 5.0 for Exchange 2000. ScanMail 5.0 for Exchange 2000 provides increased performance through single instance scanning and significantly reduced system resource requirements. Enhanced security features include the ability to scan both inbound and outbound email attachments and tight integration with the Microsoft Windows 2000 Cluster API (Application Programming Interface). Scheduled to ship in Q4, 2000, ScanMail 5.0 for Exchange 2000 is designed to safeguard corporate networks from rapidly proliferating email-borne viruses at the Exchange server, before they have a chance to reach the user's desktop, infect, spread or shut down the mail server.

"With the launch of Exchange 2000, Trend Micro is prepared to provide an antivirus solution for Exchange 2000," said Stan Sorensen, group product manager, Server Applications at Microsoft. " Trend Micro's ScanMail for Exchange product is a valuable component to our customers deploying a secure Exchange 2000 messaging and collaboration infrastructure."

"Like gazelles approaching a popular watering hole, companies deploying Exchange 2000 must protect themselves from predators looking for any signs of weakness and vulnerability," according to Mark Levitt, research director at IDC. "Antivirus solutions like ScanMail which protect the rising volumes of email communications have become almost as critical as the emails themselves due to the tremendous damage that can be caused by viruses."

"I am very impressed with ScanMail 5.0 for Exchange 2000," says Cary Shufelt, Systems Engineer at the College of Business, Oregon State University. "From an administrator's point of view, ScanMail's ease-of-use, stability, notification, and auto-update features are top notch. I would recommend this solution to anyone."

According to a recent survey from The Radicati Group, a consulting and market research firm specializing in messaging, 44% of the Fortune 1000 companies surveyed have standardized or are in the process of migrating to Microsoft Exchange. In addition, more than half of the companies recently surveyed by ICSA Labs were found to have no virus on their email servers. With damages associated with computer viruses exceeding $12.1 billion for 1999 alone (Computer Economics), it is clear that there is a critical need for a reliable, comprehensive security solution for Microsoft Exchange environments.

"Viruses can interrupt productivity, and in a severe situation, shut down business activity all together," says Wayne Biehn, Sales Director, SecureData. "Trend Micro is pleased to be working with Microsoft to address these important issues by reducing the risks associated with computer viruses in the Microsoft Exchange environment."

Increased performance capabilities

ScanMail 5.0 for Exchange 2000 provides network administrators with increased performance capabilities including Smart Scanning and significantly reduced system resource requirements. Smart Scanning (i.e., single-instance scanning), enabled through the close integration with Microsoft's Virus Scan API (VSAPI), provides a 100% increase in email scanning speed when compared to antivirus products that rely on the MAPI protocol for scanning (according to internal testing). Smart scanning of email attachments provides high reliability, scalability, and performance, as messages will only be scanned once, regardless of the number of servers, senders, and recipients. Internal tests have also shown that ScanMail 5.0 significantly reduces system resource requirements by requiring less memory usage (7MB) and utilizing on average only 10% of Exchange 2000 resources.

Enhanced security features

ScanMail 5.0 for Exchange 2000 provides numerous security enhancements such as the ability to scan both inbound and outbound email attachments for both known and previously unknown macro viruses and other malicious code, ensuring complete virus protection in the Exchange environment. ScanMail 5.0 is now also tightly integrated with the Microsoft Windows 2000 Cluster API for fault tolerance and disaster prevention, ensuring a secure, 24X7 messaging environment even during fail-over. Additional enhanced security features include:

  • Earlier detection and elimination of auto-executing viruses by intercepting and scanning at the Information/Web Store before mail hits the Exchange server mailboxes

  • Scanning attachments that reside inside the information store before the user can open them and before they are delivered to individual mailboxes reduces the threat of virus infections

  • Supporting single or multiple exchange databases enhances security by ensuring that all databases are scanned

ScanMail 5.0 for Exchange 2000

Guarding the email gateway, ScanMail for Exchange 2000 is a powerful layer of protection against known and unknown macro viruses, Trojans, worms, and other content security threats. ScanMail provides real-time scanning, detection, and removal of these threats inside the Web Store, helping stop the spread of viruses before they are replicated between multiple Exchange servers, or reach desktops. A highly scalable multi-threaded/multi-process security solution, ScanMail 5.0 for Exchange 2000 is installed on Exchange servers, enabling uniform antivirus and security policies across the enterprise. ScanMail is the first true cluster compliant antivirus solution that integrates with the Windows 2000 Cluster API. It provides a file-blocking feature for emergency virus alert situations, contains both a Windows and Web-based administrator interface for remote deployment and management, and is Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Ready and Windows 2000 Advance Server Ready.
