Trend Micro wins $4.6m contract for anti-virus solutions for US Defence Department, Coast Guard

Johannesburg, 01 Nov 2002

Secure Data, a member of the JSE-listed ERP.com Group, and the southern African distributor for Trend Micro security software, today announced that the latter had been awarded a five-year, $4.6 million contract to provide server-based anti-virus solutions for the US Defence Information Systems Agency (DISA), which includes the Department of Defence (DOD) and the US Coast Guard.

Trend Micro will work with Government Technology Solutions, a specialised systems integrator that provides integrated security solutions to the government, to deliver market-leading server-based anti-virus solutions to agencies responsible for the nation's defence.

"Trend Micro is honoured to enhance our partnership with the Department of Defence and the Coast Guard by providing our multi-layered 'best of breed' products and award-winning support," said Mike Lisi, vice-president, government and enterprise sales for Trend Micro. "As the global leader in server-based anti-virus and content security solutions*, we recognise the increasing importance of stopping e-mail and network-based viruses at the server before they ever reach a desktop computer, a key to DISA's Enterprise Anti-virus Software Initiative."

Under the terms of the five-year contract, Trend Micro will provide server-based anti-virus software including InterScan VirusWall for NT/2000, Solaris and Linux platforms; ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange for NT/2000; Trend Micro Control Manager; Premium Support Program, and customer training. In addition, PC-cillin for Wireless was selected to protect personal digital assistants (PDAs).

"As a major provider of security solutions to Department of Defence users worldwide, we recommend only Trend Micro anti-virus solutions," said Robert Deitz II, president of Government Technology Solutions, Inc. "We have worked with Trend Micro to build a long and productive relationship with the Department of Defence and see this contract award as validation for those efforts."

Although this is the first time Trend Micro has been awarded a portion of the DISA contract, the company already provides anti-virus protection to approximately one million Department of Defence users. Trend Micro is also working closely with the Department of Defence to attain National Information Assurance Partnership (NIAP) certification on a number of its products. NIAP is a US government initiative designed to promote the development of technically sound security requirements for IT products and systems and appropriate metrics for evaluating them. It is intended to ensure that Trend Micro's products are held to a high standard of utility and security, sufficient for use in the US Department of Defence, and in all federal and state government applications.
