Secure Data, a member of the JSE-listed ERP.com Group, and the southern African distributor for Trend security software, today announced that Trend Micro's co-founder and chief technology officer, Eva Chen, has been named one of the top five most influential "Women of Vision" in the September 2003 issue of Information Security magazine.
The magazine selected a group of 25 visionaries, including educational, IT and business leaders, for their contributions to the field of information security and for "enhancing the idea of info security not just as an IT investment but as a business proposition".
Among them, five were named the most influential "Women of Vision", and will be honoured by the Executive Women's Forum on Information Security at a special ceremony this week in Florida.
One of the co-founders of Trend Micro, Eva Chen has served as the company's chief technology officer since 1996, and is responsible for overall product strategy and direction of technologies. Under her leadership, Trend Micro introduced the world's first server-based anti-virus product (ServerProtect), first gateway-based anti-virus product (InterScan) VirusWall), first mail server-based anti-virus product (ScanMail), and first Web-based central management console (Trend Virus Control System).
These products revolutionised what had been a predominantly desktop-based anti-virus security industry, and helped the company achieve and maintain leading market share positions since 1999. According to IDC in 2003, Trend Micro held the number one market share in both the Internet gateway and mail server markets for anti-virus software for the third consecutive year.
"Innovation has always been the driving force behind Trend Micro, so it is an honour to be recognised for contributing to the vision that has made us a global success in a few short years," stated Chen. "For me, this is also a great recognition of all the people at Trend Micro who make that vision into a reality, through their ingenuity and tireless efforts."
Today, Chen's development team numbers more than 500 engineers responsible for the research, design and creation of Trend Micro's award-winning products and services. Chen was instrumental in the development of several technology patents for detection and removal of computer viruses. She has been previously recognised by the YWCA, and by Secure Computing magazine with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
