Robust network connectivity is an essential feature of business operations today, and a leading-edge router product line gives a fresh boost to this vital enterprise component.
Network Platforms, the sole agent for the advanced DrayTek product range in Southern Africa, has announced the release of the DrayTek Vigor 2830 Series ADSL Router Firewall. The series provides users with secure uptime and greater bandwidth capacity through triple connections, as well as tough security features.
Says Network Platforms MD Bradley Love: “One of the main functions of this series is its ability to handle three WAN connections to enhance your Internet connectivity. It has built-in ADSL, a gigabit Ethernet WAN port that can connect to another ADSL modem, Diginet Line or any connectivity for that matter. The third WAN port is a USB port that can be used for 3G modems. This gives you the flexibility to connect to any communications medium or a combination thereof.”
The multiple WAN interfaces can be used either for WAN-backup or load balancing. WAN-backup provides contingency (redundancy) in case your primary ADSL line or ISP suffers a temporary outage. Internet traffic will be temporarily routed via the secondary Internet access.
Select your level
There are three models in the series, these being the 2830, 2830n and 2830Vn. Comments Love: “The 2830 provides base functionality on firewalling across the board. The 2830n has additional wireless connectivity and features dual-band WiFi providing two separate frequencies.
“This means that if there are multiple wireless networks in an area all operating on the same frequency, you can avoid congestion by setting the router to pick up your own network on another frequency.
“The 2830Vn has wireless as well and the 'V' stands for voice because it has two analogue phone line (FXS) ports. Quality of service is setup automatically when using the FXS ports on the router.”
The router also has an FX0 port to take a telephone line input, which provides a valuable failover if the VOIP connection fails because then voice calls can be handled by a normal analogue line connection.
SME advantage
Love points out that this advanced product range is well suited to the SME market, providing bandwidth security through redundancy with its triple WAN connections. “If you need more bandwidth because of an increase in the number of users, you can have two ADSL lines connected and if either of those fail, you can switch over to a 3G connection,” he says.
“Moreover, from a pricing perspective the devices are extremely competitive - you would definitely pay more for a device with three WAN connections on other brands.”
The Vigor 2830 series is DrayTek's flagship ADSL router/firewall family and the very latest version of the Vigor 28xx series, winner of the PC Pro wireless router award for the past three years in a row. Packed with features, the Vigor 2830 offers truly comprehensive ADSL connectivity and security.
The routers also carry a four port gigabit switch on the LAN side to provide fast connectivity for your server or other local PCs, enabling the highest speeds for local data transfer.
Robust and comprehensive firewall
Security features include content filtering, Web application controls and new object-based firewall management system. DrayTek routers focus on providing high levels of security. The firewall protects against attacks including DoS (denial-of-service) attacks, IP-based attacks and access by unauthorised remote systems. Wireless, Ethernet and VPN are also sheltered by various protection systems.
The latest (Version 3) DrayTek object-based firewall allows even more setup flexibility than ever, enabling you to create combinations of users and use rules and restrictions to manage multi-departmental organisations.
Web content filtering
Managing employees' online time is facilitated by content control features which allow you to set restrictions on Web site access, block download of certain file or data types, block specific Web sites with whitelists or blacklists, and block IM/P2P applications or other potentially harmful or wasteful content.
Restrictions can be per user, per PC or universal. Using DrayTek's GlobalView service, you can block whole categories of Web sites (eg, gambling, adult sites etc), subject to an annual subscription to the GlobalView service, which is continuously updated with new or changed site categorisations or sites which have become compromised (such as those infected with malware). A free 30-day trial is included with your new router.
