Tripp Lite suspends power struggle

Johannesburg, 09 Feb 2000

One Technology Group (OTG), the Own Brand company in the Siltek IT Supply chain group, has announced availability of the Tripp Lite range of Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) units.

Designed for the challenges faced by online users, this UPS provides modem/fax coupled with traditional UPS support in a single unit. "This product prevents loss by ensuring the continued operation of on-line connections during short power losses," says Ross Jardien, product manager at OTG. "It also provides constant power during long file transfers, Web browsing/maintenance and e-mail downloads."

Jardien explains that when users conduct on-line business or use an internal modem/fax they open a "back door" for damaging power surges to enter through the telephone line connected to their PC. "The Internet UPS's built-in surge protector closes that 'back door'. The SmartPro UPS provides battery backup to connected devices when AC power fails. Designed to feature two-way serial port communication, which works with free PowerAlert software, the SmartPro allows connected computers to save open files and shut themselves down during an extended blackout - even when unattended. Jardien says the UPS features multiple serial ports, allowing communication over a network and shutting down several computers simultaneously.

The SmartPro line includes six models, rated from 450VA (Volt-amp) to 3000VA output extended battery life can be achieved with an optional external battery connector.

Keeping the AC power supply stable is another challenge faced by many large corporations. "Abnormally low and high voltages are created within a building by increased demand on the power circuits - from air-conditioning, to PCs and peripherals," says Jardien. "With the OmniSmart UPS the built-in microprocessor detects and adjusts incoming voltage to ensure that it remains stable."

Extreme Voltage OmniSmart models correct severe brownouts and high voltages. Jardien says these UPSs are designed for environments that routinely experience extreme power fluctuations. However, even the home office user is catered for as models in this range are rated between 700VA and 1400VA.
