Trojan.Exploit variants dominate the Top Ten E-threats for November, with no less than six of them accounting for over 25% of the total number of detections, according to BitDefender, an award-winning provider of anti-virus software and data security solutions.
These Trojans are iframe injection scripts, usually hosted on malicious or compromised Web sites, which get loaded by script-enabled browsers. These Trojans make the browser load links to continuously exploit the computer, in an attempt to find a "weak spot" (such as an outdated installation of Adobe Reader), which can then be used to convince the target computer to download and execute other malware.
In first place, with 6.17% of total detections, is Trojan.Exploit.JS.O, a malicious Javascript that contains exploits. Trojan.Exploint.JS.O is usually hosted on malicious Web sites, attempting to download more malware after being run successfully.
The "old faithful" Trojan.Clicker.CM is in fourth position and is the most widespread ad-serving Trojan. The list is continues with a rogue anti-virus product Adware.FakeAntivirus.L, in seventh place, and the well-known Wimad Trojan downloader, ranking ninth place.
"It's still a case of Web threats ruling the pack through a well-known malware strategy. Using volume alone, they manage to remain active and even gain new victims, although the rate of success for any such e-threat, considered separately, is quite small," commented Head of BitDefender Antivirus Lab, Sorin Dudea.
