Within less than a week of announcing that it has a Xerox iGen 3 available to do on-demand, variable data, full colour printing, Tunleys Mail and Print has had significant interest from its customers wanting to use the digital printing press to produce their printing jobs.
Jeff van der Watt, CEO of Tunleys Mail and Print, says the printing press, supplied by Bytes Document Solutions, opens up new avenues for his business. “It adds another dimension to our business - we've never been able to do high-quality full colour variable data or on-demand printing.”
Bytes Document Solutions is a division of Bytes Technology Group, distributor of Xerox to 26 African countries and wholly owned by JSE-listed Altron.
There are three arms to Tunleys' business: high-volume printing for financial institutions and businesses, a fully automated mailroom and an electronic communications division, which handles communications via e-mail or SMS on behalf of clients.
“On the printing side, we were restricted to monochrome. The global trend is to pre-printed colour stationery, and full colour on-demand printing.
“For our financial institution clients, the ability to tailor-make communications to their high-value and private bank clients is a differentiator. The iGen3 allows us to be far more creative and make the output for our customers and their clients much more exciting,” Van der Watt says.
Bytes Document Solutions facilitated the purchase of the iGen 3 via one of its other clients, which had upgraded one of its iGen3 presses to two Xerox 1000 presses.
Paul Haglich, Product & Marketing Manager of the Production Systems Group in the Xerox division of Bytes Document Solutions, says: “Although it is a used machine, it has only reached about 25% of its life cycle. It made sense to offer it to Tunleys, which already runs a number of Xerox printing presses and who wanted to develop its digital-colour printing capabilities.”
Van der Watt says the cost-to-benefit ratio “made the deal a no-brainer”.
Including upgrading of Tunleys' premises (with new air conditioning, ducting and humidifiers), staff training and installation, it took six weeks to get the printing press into operation. It was officially unveiled to Tunleys' clients in late August.
“The iGen 3 shows that we're really a force to be reckoned with. We can offer - under one roof - all the services customers may need when it comes to their client communications,” says Van der Watt.
