Novell has made several announcements that it says will help open source software (OSS) developers to "monetise" their creations and give its channel more choices.
These include the shipping of Open Enterprise Server (OES) with a choice of a Linux kernel, a 10-year extension of support and updates for GroupWise, and the launch of the Linux Small Business Suite and ZenWorks 7.
"Our announcements all have a channel impact," says Ladd Timpson, Novell`s worldwide director of channel marketing.
"Specifically OES and the Small Business suite offer the chance to sell vendor licensing and support on OSS-based technology, and to bring customer costs down."
He adds that with the growth of Linux as a development environment, these products also form the basis for the application development of independent software vendors.
Kick-start
Novell also highlighted its Market Start programme, an entrepreneurial project that was endorsed by chairman and CEO Jack Messman this week at BrainShare, held in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Timpson says the programme has venture capital funding elements, and will identify strong solutions from companies that don`t have the wherewithal to take them to market.
Solutions will be tested and validated in a formal environment, supported by Novell infrastructure, after which the companies can leverage Novell`s channel and support.
