Twitter has started rolling out a new feature, which will see the micro-blogging site e-mailing a weekly digest to users.

The digest will be a summary of what Twitter deems the most relevant Tweets and stories shared by the people the user follows on the site.

Twitter's director of growth and international, Othman Laraki, says: “Stories feature a design similar to the recently updated Discover tab, emphasising who shared each story beneath summaries to help you decide which ones matter most to you.”

According to Laraki, users can add their views to stories included in the summary by tweeting directly from within the e-mail.

“This new e-mail digest also features the most engaging Tweets seen by the people you follow, even if you don't follow those who wrote them. You can see who from your network retweeted or favourited these Tweets and click 'View details' to retweet, favourite, reply or view the conversation around them,” says Laraki.

The new feature will be rolled out to all users over the next few weeks. Preferences for the feature can be set in the “Notification Settings” tab on Twitter.

Key acquisitions

At the time, the Summify founders said their vision for the service was to connect users with the most relevant news, in the most efficient manner.

“As hundreds of millions of people worldwide are up and consuming Twitter, we realised it's the best platform to execute our vision at a truly global scale. Since Twitter shared this vision with us, joining the company made perfect sense,” said Summify.

Twitter also recently hired the team behind RestEngine, a personalised e-mail marketing provider. The new hires immediately led to speculation that Twitter had its eye on e-mail expansion. RestEngine was known for campaigns that were personalised using social graph data.
