Twitter opens management system
Twitter has released Gizzard data management system as an open source project, states Strategy Eye.
The application provides developers with a framework that enables efficient access to large amounts of data stored across multiple locations.
Gizzard is said to help Twitter conserve computing resources by acting as an intermediary for users and applications trying to access the data. The system is also designed to be fault-tolerant by rerouting requests to corrupted segments of data through other segments.
Qubes OS virtualises for security
The security researcher who invented malware known as Blue Pill has come up with a secure open source operating system called Qubes OS that is available for alpha-testing downloads, writes Network World.
Qubes OS uses Xen virtual machines (VMs) as building blocks where users organise groups of applications. The VMs are managed on a single piece of hardware managed by the Xen hypervisor.
Qubes OS isolates VMs from one another, and creates separate VMs such as a network VM and storage VM. If a VM is compromised that VM becomes isolated, allowing the rest of the machine to remain in tact.
GroundWork, Eucalyptus partner
Eucalyptus System has partnered with networking monitoring vendor GroundWork Open Source on a project entitled GroundWork Monitor Enterprise Cloud, says Datamation.
The solution aims to provide enhanced cloud monitoring and management capabilities, using Eucalyptus which allows enterprises to build and leverage private and public cloud infrastructures.
"GroundWork Monitor Enterprise Cloud is a hybrid solution that includes some open source components and some proprietary components," says Simon Bennett, senior director of product management at GroundWork Open Source.
