Two new ProLiant servers for entry-level, emerging companies

Johannesburg, 22 Apr 2002

Compaq has released two new servers in its ProLiant range, designed to provide low-cost and high-performance for entry-level and fast growing companies.

The Compaq ProLiant ML330 Second Generation server is a dual processor unit for the entry level, small office market with less than 100 users. With support for up to two Intel Pentium III 1,26GHz processors and a choice of Ultra3 SCSI or integrated ATA RAID 0, 1 or 1+0, the server combines multi-processing power with flexible storage options.

The unit is ideal for small office environments which require reliable server technology at a lower price point; a server that is easy to set up and maintain, a safe level of data integrity or need a trusted brand with global support. Typical applications in which the server is suited include file and print sharing, small databases, e-mail and shared Internet access, as a domain controller or gateway, DNS, firewall or most standard network functions.

In addition to the proven Compaq design and technology, the ML330 G2 is the only non-hot plug server on the market to offer a global, comprehensive pre-failure warranty which covers all system components including processors, memory and hard drives.

The unit features 128MB of RAM as standard expandable to 4GB, 10/100 Ethernet NIC, two non-hot plug hard drive bays, tower chassis with optional rack enabling kit for integration into Compaq or third-party racks, and Compaq `s SmartStart and InSight Manager 7 software.

For emerging, fast-growing companies looking for a robust and affordable 1-way dense server, Compaq offers the ProLiant DL320 server, designed for front-end applications without forcing the user to pay for unnecessary high-end features. Its density-optimised features allow for rapid and easy deployment in high-density rack environments such as corporate data centres, ISPs and Internet companies where rapid growth and changing business requirements are the norm.

The DL320 features 1U/1P technology and multiple racking options for optimal use of data centre space and deployment flexibility. This makes it ideal not only as a front-end server for single function deployments and Web hosting farms, video streaming and media applications but also as a utility server for domain controller and gateway applications, Web applications, firewall duty and developmental test beds. Remote manageability enables users to easily support distributed data centres. Simple access to all system components allows for quick maintenance and upgrades while its built-in cable management resolves cable sprawl problems in data centres.

Other features of the DL320 include Intel Pentium III processor options, 128MB RAM as standard expandable up to 2GB, a choice of Ultra ATA/100 and Wide Ultra2 SCSI controller, and two 10/100 Ethernet NICs. In addition, the server is supplied with a number of software applications for server management including SmartStart and Compaq InSight 7 as well as support for ProLiant Essentials Rapid Deployment Packs, ActiveUpdate, and Compaq Availability Agents. The Remote InSight Lights Out Edition is available as an option for secure remote control from any Web browser anywhere in the world.

Says Jeffery Yu, Product Manager, Compaq Industry Standard Server Group: "Both the ML330 and DL320 address specific segments of the server market while offering many of the same features and performance levels as the higher-end models in the ProLiant range. Combined with Compaq`s proven server technology and global support infrastructure, the new units are set to become big sellers in the SME markets as well as the enterprise environment."
