Uber Eats has expanded its delivery app to Potchefstroom, making the North West academic city the 13th to have the service locally.

From this week, Potchefstroom-based users of the food delivery app can order their favourite meals from the mobile app, which allows people to search for local restaurants, order a meal and have it delivered to their homes.

With over one million downloads locally, Uber Eats operates in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Pietermaritzburg, Bloemfontein, Soweto, Polokwane, Pietermaritzburg and Port Elizabeth.

With restaurants being one of the hardest hit industriesduring SA’s level three lockdown, due to limited operational times and halved capacity, Uber Eats says it offers a platform that can sustain supply, increase demand and still keep its user community safe through contactless delivery.

“It’s an exciting time for Uber Eats to be launching in Potchefstroom, as this gives our local restaurants an alternate avenue to still operate, generate an income and service their customers, all in a few taps. We work closely with our restaurant-partners to ensure the app sets their business up for success,” says Shane Austin, senior operational manager of Uber Eats South Africa.

The expansion comes on the back of a nation-wide strike by hundreds of Uber Eats drivers almost two weeks ago, in protest against low wages and what they call “slavery” treatment.

Uber Eats says as SA continues to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic, safety continues to be a priority, and it requires all delivery-drivers to comply with an in-app safety checklist, which reminds them to sanitise their delivery bags and vehicles after every order, and they will be asked to take a selfie before going online to verify they are wearing a mask or face covering, using object recognition technology.

In May 2020, the delivery app partnered with local retailer Game to deliver food and essential products to customers during the nation-wide lockdown.

The delivery service says it has provided employment opportunities to over 400 000 people globally and aims to create hundreds of flexible work opportunities in SA.
