Ubuntu coming soon to Sun`s Niagara
Canonical will support Sun Microsystems` Niagara servers with the upcoming release of its Ubuntu Linux distribution, the companies are expected to announce today, reports CNet.
Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (long-term support) will feature support for the T1000 and T2000 servers, which use the UltraSparc T1 processor formerly known as Niagara, said Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Canonical. That version is scheduled to be released on 1 June, he said.
Viewers `confused` by HDTV
TV viewers in the UK are confused about high-definition TV (HDTV) with one in five not realising they need to buy an HD-ready TV set to receive the crystal clear pictures, reports The Register.
Half of those quizzed didn`t realise they would also need a new HD set-top box, while two-thirds failed to realise they would also have to pay for a monthly subscription.
The findings are part of research by price comparison outfit uSwitch.com, which found that 2.6 million UK households are planning to get HDTV next year.
China takes on Intel
China is taking chipmaker Intel to the International Standards Association for imposing a near-monopoly on encryption standards for wireless local area network gear, reports The Inquirer. Beijing said Chipzilla had used unethical behaviour and wants the ISO to look into it.
China says that the American Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) broke ISO rules when its national bodies voted on new technology to mend security loopholes in the WLAN standard. It claims the IEEE didn`t follow ethical and procedural rules and principles.
In March both the IEEE and China asked the ISO to approve a standard for wireless. The ISO rejected China`s WAPI standard, but Beijing claims that was only because the IEEE misled many national bodies that voted on the plan.
