Ubuntu debuts Lucid Lynx

The Ubuntu team has released a Long-Term Support (LTS) operating system (OS) codenamed Lucid Lynx, reports LWN.net.

The release incorporates the desktop edition and the server edition. The server edition can be used on servers, on Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud, and Amazon EC2 public cloud servers.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS will be supported for three years on desktops and five years on servers. Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition will be supported for 18 months.

Kaspersky wants 'open' iPhone

Eugene Kaspersky, founder and CEO of Kaspersky Labs, says Apple needs to change its iPhone OS to be more open like Android, reports The Inquirer.

He states the OS will lose market share without more software supporting it, adding that Symbian lost the market because it didn't open its functionality. "Nokia changed its mind and now Symbian is open source. They moved from the far, far left to the far, far right in terms of security."

Security vendors can't put software on the iPhone as Apple has locked the phone down from free access to its OS.

MS claims Android patent infringement

Microsoft claims the open source Android OS violates its patents in a number of areas, says ChannelWeb.

Microsoft says it has invested heavily in its patent portfolio and has a responsibility to its customers, and shareholders to ensure competitors do not free on their innovations.

"We have also consistently taken a proactive approach to licensing to resolve IP infringement by other companies, and have been talking with several device manufacturers to address our concerns relative to the Android mobile platform," says Horacio Gutierrez, Microsoft's deputy-general counsel.
