Ubuntu headed for tablet PCs
Open Source developer Canonical is working on a version of Ubuntu Linux operating system (OS) for tablet computers, states The Inquirer.
Chris Kenyon, vice-president of Canonicals OEM services, says the OS will be a lightweight version of Linux with a simplified touch-friendly interface.
The tablets with the Ubuntu tabled OS will appear at the beginning of next year.
Symbian releases FOSS font
The Symbian Foundation in partnership with Monotype Imaging, a foundation member and text imaging solution provider, have released an open source font for the Symbian platform, writes Softpedia.
The font, Monotype Yuppie or MYuppy Chinese font, is aimed towards the Chinese mobile phone market. The font has been designed to perform on high-quality mobile displays.
"Open-sourcing a production-quality Chinese font is a significant step for Symbian and the success of its community in China. We are always looking to improve the offering for the 780 million users in China's mobile market," says Lee Williams, executive director of Symbian.
Mozilla distributes Thunderbird RC2
The open source e-mail client Thunderbird 3.1 has reached its second release candidate, reports The Register.
The next version of the client, codenamed Lanikai, produces faster search results and a quick filter toolbar, a new migrations assistant, saved file manager, and ISP settings.
The latest version is available for Windows, Mac and Linux machines.
