Udemy, the world's largest destination for online courses, today launched site-wide support for 10 languages, making it easier for students around the world to take advantage of Udemy's 8 000+ courses and for global experts to launch courses and attract native-speaking students. An 11th language, Hindi, will launch this summer. Udemy also announced it has registered one million students.
All text on the Udemy site now appears in the visitor's native language, based on his or her location, enabling students to more easily navigate the site to learn about courses. Instructors can post courses in their native languages and more easily attract students who speak the same language.
"While there is a lot of great learning content available online in English, every country in the world has teachers, local leaders and industry executives who want to teach material unique to their region," said Udemy President and COO, Dennis Yang. "At the same time, students want to learn about topics from local experts on content specifically relevant to them, and not all US content is applicable."
Half of Udemy students visit the site from outside the US, and Udemy already offers more than 600 courses in Spanish and almost 150 courses in Portuguese. Several instructors have earned more than $10 000 teaching courses in other languages on the platform, including Madrid-based Fernando Rodriguez, whose Spanish-language iOS programming course has earned $32 000 in its first two months on Udemy. Another instructor, Jos'e Maria Gonzalez, has earned over $15 000 since launching his Spanish-language course on virtualisation at the end of June.
