Uganda`s open source software (OSS) community has been contributing towards Linux-based server software, which will cut costs for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), says James Wire Lunghabo, CEO of Linux Uganda.
Developers showcased the software, SME Server, at Uganda`s OSS weekend to encourage the implementation of the software in Ugandan SME business models, said Lunghabo.
SME Server offers an e-mail server, Web server, DNS server, file server, printing server, dynamic host configuration protocol, anti-virus and anti-spam protection.
The software creates a secure Linux server, which is a free alternative to expensive and complex proprietary software, says Lunghabo.
If SMEs using the software can operate at minimal costs, it will encourage business growth in the sector, he says. "SMEs are battling to get their businesses off the ground because they are spending the majority of their money on costly proprietary software."
The OSS community is developing and modifying the software on a Ugandan business model of operation, says Lunghabo, who explains that software compatible with specific business operations can help business productivity.
"Through OSS initiatives like these, Uganda has an opportunity to modify software to suit local needs, which offers a good opportunity for the local SME industry to grow rapidly."
