Ukash, the leading cash payment solution for the Internet, has signed a deal with Pick n Pay to make electronic cash vouchers available from its 750 outlets across South Africa. The partnership makes it easier than ever for millions of consumers in South Africa to pay for goods and services online.
Ukash vouchers are available from every checkout in Pick n Pay stores across the country. Consumers simply exchange cash for a Ukash voucher in 10, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1 000 and 1 500 rand denominations, and receive a receipt with a ready-to-spend, 19-digit secure PIN code. This can be used to pay directly at the growing number of South African Web sites and mobile sites, which accept Ukash, including retailers such as wantitall.co.za, bidorbuy and social networks mig33 and mibli.
Mark Chirnside, CEO of Ukash, explains: “By partnering with one of South Africa's leading retailers, we are increasing the availability of Ukash to consumers wanting to use e-cash. Ukash is quickly establishing itself as a mainstream solution for online payments in South Africa, introducing new consumers to Internet commerce and bringing enormous opportunities for growth to retailers.”
Warren Marsden, General Manager e-Commerce of Pick n Pay, adds: “With the growth of e-commerce and online retailing, Pick n Pay are keen to meet the demand for customers wanting to use cash to shop online. Ukash is a secure, tested solution and we are confident that it will be successful across our stores.”
UK-based Ukash launched in South Africa after partnering with Blue Label Telecoms in 2008. The company enables customers to pay over the Internet using cash, without the need for a debit/credit card or revealing sensitive financial details. Ukash is available at more than 275 000 locations across Europe and South Africa and shortly also online in most territories.

Ukash
Ukash is a globally recognised e-commerce payment method to enable online purchases using cash, providing freedom from credit and debit card fraud, repudiations and charge-backs, and protecting personal identity.
Ukash is regulated by the UK Financial Services Authority (FSA) and operates as one of the only a small number of Electronic Money Institutions, a status that allows a single maximum online cash payment transaction of up to lb500/EUR750.
Uniquely numbered Ukash vouchers are widely available through payment terminals in retail outlets across Europe and South Africa. In the UK, they are also available direct to mobile for Vodafone subscribers and from spring 2009, Ukash vouchers will also be issued online from the company's Web site in most European territories.
The technology behind Ukash is protected by several patents registered across the Smart Voucher database and functionality and is, as such, protected by Patent Law in all the major economies of the world. Ukash is a registered trademark of Smart Voucher.
In 2008, Ukash established a strategic partnership with South African payments giant Blue Label Telecoms to develop the brand's services.
