Ukukhanya unveils the world`s first rugged handheld PC scanner

Johannesburg, 10 Feb 2000

Ukukhanya Technologies has launched the fex21-S model rugged handheld PC, designed to use the unit`s modular `FeatureBay` system, a future-proofing system allowing swift factory-fitted integration of peripheral technologies as they develop. This is the first of Husky`s next generation fex21 devices.

It has been confirmed that the S model will include Symbol`s latest Adaptive Logic Technology1 (ALT), SE900-1000A scan engine, recognised as `the smallest, lightest and brightest scan engine in the world`.

Ukukhanya Technologies marketing director Dean Latimer says the fex21-S fills a critical gap in the current scanning sector by combining three features hitherto unavailable in a single device. The system offers advanced ultra-powerful computing based on the Microsoft Windows CE platform, military standard rugged technology offering across the range of environmental and the flexibility of fully integrated ALT laser-based scanning. "This creates the opportunity to enter new application areas while reducing in existing solutions," he added.

The result is the world`s first rugged handheld PC scanner, an all-weather, cross-environment computing device combining the ability to scan with efficacy across the broad spectrum of mobile data solutions.

Historically, attempts to engineer a truly rugged scanner have been compromised by the fragility of internal moving components, particularly the read mirror. The new S model adopts a variant of ABS, which, in synergy with HUSKY, transcends one of the last limits of auto-identification information technology. "Waterproofed to IP65, collision proof to at least 1,2 metres onto a hard surface and tested to environmental standards for temperature, vibration and dust, it is designed for real-life in the elements," said Latimer.

Auto ID has presented significant difficulties for the mobile data sector. Users require advanced technologies able to withstand significant environmental risk and function in bright light conditions. The unit uniquely balances the rugged/visibility trade-off utilising a `high vision` engine engineered for outdoor applications where it offers full immunity to ambient light.

Measuring the size of a finger nail, the miniature scan engine enables the system to retain the ergonomic utility of its classic hinge-less open book design without sacrificing performance or ruggedness.

The fex21-S will impact strongly in auto-ID transport, logistics, heavy-goods distribution, agriculture, automotive, rail, healthcare, warehousing, manufacturing, quality control, timber, manufacturing and field service sectors where a truly rugged integrated solution is long overdue. Key applications include asset management, pricing management, order processing, goods tracking, inventory control and shipping.
