Ulead launches new MPEG encoding-decoding engine

Johannesburg, 22 Feb 2002

A new MPEG encoding-decoding engine (codec) called "Ulead MPEG.Now", offers highly efficient rendering performance and excellent output video quality. It has been introduced to SA by Square One Solutions Group, the JSE-listed local distributor for leading international image editing, video editing and Web graphics software developer, Ulead Systems Inc.

MPEG.Now will be used in all future video and DVD authoring programs distributed by Ulead.

"MPEG encoding is a critical foundation technology in modern video-editing systems," says Lisa Jackson, Ulead product manager at Square One Solutions. "By engineering a proprietary codec, Ulead has gained independence from third-party developers of codec technology, providing a single point of contact for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) seeking video editing and DVD authoring solutions to include with their products."

Jackson believes that technological independence will allow Ulead to gain tighter control of features in all upcoming video-editing and DVD-authoring products. MPEG.Now also marks another technology milestone for Ulead, a company known for being the first to include DVD authoring into consumer-level video editing software.

"By using its own internally-developed codec, Ulead increases the efficiency with which it can implement future technologies and gains more flexibility in negotiating with partners. OEM businesses, for example, will benefit from Ulead MPEG.Now because it allows them to license all the video technology they need from a single source."

The Ulead MPEG.Now software codec provides high-quality, real-time MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 encoding and non-real-time transcoding. It achieves an efficiency level capable of providing real-time features such as direct MPEG capture from 1394 (FireWire) interfaces and an encoding flexibility that allows for video features such as variable bit-rate (VBR) and field- and frame-based compression.

The new codec is also optimised for reliable, long-play, real-time MPEG encoding from analogue video sources.

Square One provides integrated IT-based solutions to corporate, retail and government clients through a reseller channel that, in turn, integrates such solutions for end-users. The core business of the company encompasses document handling and information sharing solutions; knowledge management; networking; hardware, software and consumable products distribution; Internet, IT security (biometrics) and e-commerce technologies; data storage; variable data product marking and coding solutions; uninterruptible power supplies; and value-added business services.
