The University of Cape Town`s (UCT`s) law faculty and Steve Ferguson, a director at Nicci-Ferguson attorneys, will host a two-day intellectual property (IP) workshop in Cape Town on 30 June and 1 July.
"In my practice, a lot of people don`t know their rights and more often than not enter into one-sided agreements, getting 'steamrolled`," says Ferguson.
"The workshop will educate and benefit all people around IP rights in the digital age," he adds.
The course will cover general IP principles and provide insight into several aspects of copyright, ranging from what can be protected, the risks presented by technology and the Internet, and how to assert and protect their rights.
"The course will also cover the conflict between Web domain names and established trademarks and trade names," says Ferguson.
Professor Solly Leeman from the UCT private law department and UCT law lecturers Lee Ann Tong and Manini Madishi will also contribute.
The workshop is aimed at artists, designers and authors who are involved in the creation of IP, says Ferguson.
