The convergence of voice and data communications at the desktop has given birth to a new and revolutionary technology segment, identified by IDC as the Converged Branch eXchange (CBX). The CBX is that next-generation PBX platform that not only leverages open and cost-effective hardware, software, and communications sub-systems, but also provides for robust end-user voice/data applications.
Because of the attractiveness of the CBX solution, IDC forecasts the market for these next-generation voice/data communications systems to grow rapidly. From 1998 to 2003, CBX market revenues will increase at a compound annual growth rate of 100%, generating more than $1.3 billion in revenues in 2003.
"The CBX market benefits from the conjunction of many important trends in networking, computing, and business practices overall," said Paul Strauss, senior analyst with IDC`s Enterprise Networks research program. "The Internet is motivating both large and small firms to think big with respect to more advanced and affordable voice/data solutions. Intensifying IT demands has everyone reexamining their use of systems that may restrict future growth or enforce vendor lock-in. New approaches to customer service have all organizations seeking to best balance personal voice communications with efficient Web-based information processing and presentation. Even service providers looking to offer something new and different to their small business subscriber are attracted to the highly flexible and functional CBX."
Because of the tremendous potential in the CBX market, more than 30 vendors are already active in offering and/or developing CBX systems. IDC sees stiff competition among traditional voice equipment suppliers (e.g., Nortel Networks, Lucent), established data networking equipment vendors (Cisco, 3Com), and a host of startups with innovative technologies and marketing approaches.
IDC`s report, The Converged Branch eXchange (CBX) Market: 1998-2003, examines CBX technology and product trends, analyzes the drivers and dynamics affecting the CBX market, and details the product offerings and marketing strategies of influential CBX market participants, including Cisco Systems, Lucent, Nortel Networks, Siemens, 3Com, Nokia, IBM, Ericsson, Altigen, and Vertical Networks. Unit shipment and revenue market forecasts -- segmented by four distinct CBX product segments, major applications, and geographic region -- are provided through 2003.
