Union's deregistration on hold

The Communication Workers Union's (CWU's) deregistration has been suspended, pending a hearing at the Johannesburg Labour Court, on 20 September.

Earlier this month, the union was deregistered by the Department of Labour for failing to submit audited financial statements. This meant it was unable to act officially on behalf of its 18 000 ICT members at hearings, or bargain for wage increases.

The CWU lodged an appeal against the deregistration and filed a court application to have the labour department's move suspended. It also lodged an appeal at the department.

Union secretary-general Gallant Roberts says both parties agreed that the deregistration would be suspended pending a court hearing on 20 September. The deal was made an order of the court, he says.

Roberts previously said he was surprised that the department had issued the cancellation, as the parties had been in discussions over outstanding issues and the union was unaware there were other problems.

The CWU is now “working hard” to make sure it does not have to appear in court, as there are a few minor issues to resolve, which should be sorted out by 20 September, says Roberts.

The Department of Labour confirmed the deregistration has been suspended. This allows the CWU to continue acting on behalf of its members for the time being.
