Unisys, ATS Money Systems team up to sell Windows NT-based check processing solutions for retail and financial markets

Johannesburg, 20 Oct 1998
Unisys Corporation announced that ATS Money Systems has been selected as a Unisys Value Added Reseller. The two companies will jointly sell check processing solutions in banks, department stores, chain stores, and other businesses that handle a large number of cash, check and credit transactions on a daily basis.

Unisys and ATS Money Systems, Inc. will market and sell the ATS PowerEncoding software, running on Unisys ENC9600 check readers, for encoding payment amounts on checks received at the point of sale in retail stores. The two companies will collaborate on product integration, training and marketing programs throughout the United States.

"ATS PowerEncoding solutions can revolutionise conventional end-of-day cash room operations, which today require check data to be rekeyed, totaled and balanced against point-of-sale information," said Rick Carbone, vice president, Business Partner Sales, Unisys Computer Systems. "New technology from Unisys and ATS Money Systems will enable stores to achieve substantial improvements in productivity and help pave the way for significant labor savings."

Use of the technology will eliminate the need for store back-office operations to repeat the step of re-keying check amounts, information which is already captured at the point of sale. Processing bundles of checks in store back offices, the ENC9600 automatically encodes the amount of the check and verifies that the Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) code containing account information matches the code captured time of check out. The system runs unattended, allowing the operator to perform cash/coin processing and other balancing operations while these checks are being encoded.

"Having installed a significant number of Unisys ENC9600 machines with ATS PowerEncode software, we find the system`s ability to perform `hands-free` item processing has provided key productivity benefits, and substantially reinforces the value proposition we present to our retail clients," said Gerard Murphy, president of ATS Money Systems. "We find that the Unisys reputation in the item processing market, its global support infrastructure, and Fortune-100 resources are consistently valued by prospects evaluating our solution in a competitive selling situation."

All MICR information and check amounts are maintained by the ATS application. As the ENC9600 processes checks, the application ensures that MICR account information matches the information captured at point of sale. It creates reports to expedite immediate deposit for funds availability. Productivity, accuracy, labor savings and funds availability all contribute to the cost justification of this new technology.

The Unisys ENC9600 provides full document read, capture, and sort capabilities, and can be equipped with MICR or Optical Character Recognition (OCR) capability. Expandable to 13 sort pockets, the ENC9600 offers the option of adding an image capture module. It is the only dual-image module in this class, capturing two pairs of images in a single document pass. The ENC9600 can capture images in either CCITT or JPEG format.
