Unisys and Nasdaq-listed Commtouch, a leading provider of e-mail messaging solutions, have announced the signing of a formal agreement in which Commtouch will become a key e-mail partner for Unisys.
Unisys Africa will be investigating the service closely to determine its feasibility for the South African market.
Unisys delivers value-added services (VAS) solutions designed for mass-market multimedia applications through Unisys e-@ction Universal Messaging Solutions. Commtouch and Unisys have teamed to deliver a "one-stop shop" unified communication solution to network service providers (NSPs) such as mobile and fixed line operators, ISPs, ASPs and IP carriers.
The two companies have begun working together in the European market and expect to roll-out their services worldwide towards the end of this year.
With the emergence of wireless and broadband data, unified messaging is becoming a key revenue generator for multimedia services. According to Idate Research: "In 2010, around 10% of 3G network revenue will come from multimedia messaging." IDC predicts 38 million unified messaging users worldwide by 2004.
Unisys`s unified messaging system integrates with Commtouch`s Diamond e-mail messaging platform to deliver an easily integrated single mailbox to send and receive voice, fax, e-mail and short message service (SMS) to or from any fixed or wireless phone and PDA, PC, interactive TV or Web browser. Picture and video messaging are also available to terminals with access.
The integrated solution offers different storage options to optimise call flow, synchronisation, high functionality regardless of device, simple commands, billing interfaces, common Web interface for customer care and speech-enablement.
The teaming up of the Commtouch Diamond e-mail platform with Unisys`s universal messaging is an enabler for the future of IP-based communication: data, audio, video and text messaging convergence bridged by a single open carrier-grade messaging platform.

"The collaboration with Commtouch will enable network service providers to implement new revenue-generating services designed for millions of users. In addition, they will be ready to evolve with our platform in order to take advantage of the business opportunities opened by the next generation of services. If appropriate, we will be bringing the combined service to the South African market by year-end."
