Unisys supports 5 000 Siebel users on one Windows server

Johannesburg, 27 Oct 2003

Unisys has broken new ground for users of Windows-based Siebel eBusiness Applications, supporting 5 000 concurrent users with the database and application running on a single ES7000/540 enterprise server.

Unisys made the announcement at Siebel User Week 2003 in the US. The benchmark demonstrates that organisations do not have to endure the complexities of managing sprawling farms of low-function, commodity servers to power very large, global populations of concurrent Windows-based Siebel users, says Bernard Donnelly, consultancy services manager, Unisys Africa. Instead, organisations can use one high-powered Unisys ES7000, simplifying the data centre and saving on staff time, facilities space, servers, storage and software.

"Why invest in and manage dozens or even hundreds of servers for large solutions such as Siebel if you don`t have to?" asks Donnelly. "Combining the database and application on one tier, while achieving outstanding performance, is a great deployment option open to Siebel users."

The test was performed under the auspices of the Siebel Platform Sizing and Performance Program (PSPP). The Siebel PSPP simulates deployments across large global companies. The simulation includes employees, partners and customers using Siebel Call Center, Siebel Web Service, Siebel Partner Relationship Management (PRM) and Siebel Enterprise Application Integration applications.

The performance results were achieved running a single Unisys ES7000/540 server equipped with 28 Intel Xeon processors MP at 2GHz with 2MB L3 cache and 32GB of memory. The server ran the Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server operating system and SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition database with Siebel Field Service 7.5, Siebel Call Center 7.5, Siebel Sales 7.5, Siebel PRM 7.5, Siebel eSales 7.5, and Siebel eService 7.5 with a load of 5 000 concurrent users. Three Unisys ES3040 Web servers (four CPUs, 4GB of memory) and two Unisys ES3040 servers (four CPUs, 4GB of memory) ran Siebel concurrent Web user load, plus the Siebel Server components: Assignment Manager, MSMQ, Workflow Manager and HTTP Adapter.

The Unisys ES7000 provides an array of computing capabilities required for enterprise-class performance, uninterrupted availability and simplified systems administration - capabilities well known to users of large-scale computers, but unprecedented in computing environments using Microsoft and Intel technology. Its mainframe design enables the Unisys ES7000 to match the performance of large-scale systems in enterprise-class business and other critical applications at a fraction of the price.

Unisys performed the benchmark at its development and test facilities in Mission Viejo, California, under the Siebel PSPP. The tests performed under this programme have been certified by Siebel Systems and are based on real-world scenarios derived from more than 3 500 Siebel customer deployments, reflecting the most frequently used and most performance-intensive components of Siebel eBusiness Applications.

"Siebel is committed to simplifying large installations for our customers and making it easier for them to make their global architectures conform to changing business processes," says Skip Bacon, VP, technology, Siebel Systems. "Many Siebel customers will appreciate the increased flexibility and improved economy that a consolidated database and application server environment affords."
