Unisys weaves visibility into Microsoft application platform

Johannesburg, 15 Nov 2005

Unisys has reported that it will leverage Microsoft`s next-generation application platform to build and deliver solutions that help clients gain better visibility into their business and IT development processes.

This comes hot on the heels of Microsoft`s Visual Studio 2005, SQL Server 2005 and BizTalk Server 2006 launch.

Unisys extensively uses the Microsoft product portfolio in the development of its vertical and horizontal solutions. The company recently announced a number of solutions for secure business operations that incorporate the capabilities in Microsoft`s newly launched products.

"There is a strong need for them to have greater agility to meet rapidly changing demands, greater visibility into their business to enable more fully informed decision-making and the ever-present need to do more with less," says Bernard Donnelly, consulting services manager at Unisys Africa. "Our 3D Visible Enterprise methodology is closely coupled to Microsoft`s platform and gives us the opportunity to solve these problems, and help our customers make better decisions."

"The Microsoft application platform enables organisations to gain business insight and deliver faster results," says S Somasegar, corporate VP of the Developer Division at Mirosoft. "This is complementary to what Unisys is driving with its 3D Visible Enterprise initiative, and one of the key reasons why the Microsoft application platform is a key component in their strategy."

"The combination of Unisys`s technological and enterprise experience with Microsoft`s cost-effective SQL Server 2005 platform creates a high-capacity database and data warehouse environment that can give enterprises the performance to satisfy the needs of growing mandates for near-realtime reporting," says Donnelly.

Many SQL databases run on Unisys ES7000 servers, including the largest commercial SQL Server on SAP. According to the Winter Group, the largest SQL Server instance and data warehouse at 19 terabytes and five of the top peak workload data warehouses also run on Unisys ES700 servers. IDC`s Quarterly Server Tracker (February 2005) ranked Unisys as the leader in market share for Windows servers costing more than $50 000.

"For Mediterranean Shipping Company, and all other carriers, the global demands of shipping are always pressing," says Bob Erickson, senior VP for software development at Mediterranean Shipping Company. "When the US Department of Homeland Security changed the regulations of how imports were coming into the country, the new regulations impacted shipping worldwide, and we had only a few months to comply. We were able to do this because of the great employees we have throughout our company, and because of the flexibility that we enjoy in our IT infrastructure through SQL Server and Microsoft development tools and the Unisys ES7000 platform."
