Unstructured data threatens business

Johannesburg, 24 Nov 2004

Less than 15% of company information in databases is structured, leading to inefficient business processes, warns Baba Zoumanigui, IBM DB2 VP for EMEA.

"Integration and information management are key to meeting business requirements," he told IBM business partners at recent Informix Infobahn forums held in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

"Unstable foundations were usually indicated by the lack of a single enterprise view of data, overly time-consuming requests for information, no ownership of data, difficulty in complying with requirements, distrust of the quality of information, and inability to consolidate data from multiple sources," he said.

Zoumanigui said tackling these problems and responding with speed to an ever‑changing environment, required business processes that were integrated end‑to‑end across the company and with key partners, suppliers and customers, so they could respond swiftly to any demand, market opportunity or external threat.
