US Army defends itself with ISS`s RealSecure

Johannesburg, 14 Sep 1998

Internet Security Systems, the provider of adaptive security management software, announced that the United States Army has selected RealSecure to protect the US`s information, information-based systems and worldwide networks from external attacks and unauthorised use. Through this agreement, RealSecure will be deployed at over 400 US Army facilities worldwide including headquarter, regional and installation base locations.

The explosive growth of the Internet along with the sharp rise in new, sophisticated methods of exploiting networked systems, has created a significantly escalated threat environment. As part of a proactive initiative to face these new and challenging threats to critical networked information, the US Army`s CIO, Lieutenant General Campbell, chose ISS`s RealSecure 24-hour network monitoring and intrusion detection system, as a necessary technology component for managing and controlling its overall security risks.

Through its automatic monitoring and response capabilities, RealSecure will enable the US Army to deploy an enterprise-wide information Assurance and Command and Control (C2 Protect) system that can adapt to changing threat and risk conditions, detecting and responding to network attacks before damage is done.

"The deployment of ISS`s intrusion detection and response system will play a critical role in minimizing the security risks to the US Army`s information systems," says Phillip Loranger, a chief in the Department of Army Information Assurance Office. "After thorough operational and technical testing of various intrusion detection systems, we selected RealSecure due to it superior level of realtime attack recognition, management capabilities and ease of use."

Tom Noonan, president and CEO of Internet Security Systems, adds: "Security means having a strong, adaptable and automated defense system in place that is capable of staying one step ahead of the threat source. ISS`s intrusion detection solution, RealSecure, adds a critical layer of security to traditional, static safeguards such as firewalls and encryption, by automatically recognising and responding to network attacks. As the number of electronic intruders continues to grow, ISS is committed to frequently updating its attack recognition capabilities, providing the most comprehensive technology for recognising and stopping security breaches."

ISS`s products are distributed in South Africa by SMC Electronic Commerce.
