US bans online gambling

The online gambling industry was plunged into chaos, and billions were slashed from share values after the US congress passed legislation at the weekend to ban gambling there, Scotsman.com reports.

America is the biggest source of revenue for online gambling, even though the industry`s corporate centre is London.

One analyst said: "It looks the worst nightmare has come true for the industry."

Wii under the tree

According to The Inquirer, a survey of retailers conducted by the Japanese media outfit Enterbrain asked reader which game console would have better sales this holiday season; Nintendo`s Wii or PlayStation 3.

Eighty-eight percent thought Nintendo`s Wii will sell better over the Christmas break, while only 11% believed the PS3 will be tops.

When asked which system will generate most sales including all hardware, 60.7% believed Nintendo DS will be the bestseller, followed by the Nintendo Wii at 32.8%. The PS3 and the Xbox 360 scored a mere 1.6% each.

Gaming slows school performance

According to Topix.net, middle school students who watch TV or play video games during the week do worse in school, a new study finds, but weekend viewing and gaming doesn`t affect school performance much.

Children whose parents allowed them to watch R-rated movies also did worse in class, and for boys, that effect was especially strong.

Weekend viewing and gaming slightly hurt school performance, but only when the students spent more than four hours each day at it over the weekend.

Burger: King of games

IGN.com tells of a new joint venture between Xbox and Burger King. Anyone purchasing a value meal between 9 November and 24 December is to receive a discounted Xbox arcade-style game.

The three games announced are Sneak King, Big Bumpin`, and Pocketbike Racer. In them, gamers will take control of the Burger King icons such as The King, Brooke Burke, and Subservient Chicken.

The games fall into the racing, action, and adventure categories and are rated "E" for "everyone" by the Entertainment Rating Board.
