US Food and Drug Administration chooses SAS

Business intelligence solutions are increasingly being put to innovative use in the global life sciences industry. Applications include ensuring long-term drug safety and efficiency, developing far-reaching patient databases that lead to improved care, as well as providing intelligence on the spread of disease.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is among the many organisations making pioneering use of scientific intelligence solutions to bring more in-depth analyses to a wide range of research projects.

"SAS scientific intelligence solutions assist the FDA in using data mining for vaccine safety surveillance, creating a toxicology research repository and analysing chronic disease data to understand the spread of diseases," says Corey Springett, business development manager at SAS Institute, leader in business intelligence.

Under a licensing agreement, several FDA centres will gain access to SAS scientific intelligence solutions. These units include the National Center for Toxicological Research and the FDA centres responsible for biologics evaluation, radiological health, drug evaluation and research, food safety and veterinary medicine. This is a five-year, $21 million enterprise licence signed in 2000 by the US Department of Health and Human Services.

"These solutions will help the FDA create innovative and repeatable discovery research processes that can be shared across the agency's licensed centres," says Springett.

SAS has more than a quarter-century of experience in delivering business intelligence solutions to life sciences organisations, making SAS a perfect match for FDA's strategic, mission-critical applications. Its software is widely used for analysing and reporting clinical trials data, and since 1999 the FDA has specified the use of SAS file formats for data sets included in electronic regulatory submissions to the FDA.

In addition, nearly 600 pharmaceutical companies and divisions worldwide use SAS's wide variety of solutions for the life sciences market, including Bristol-Myers Squibb, Eli Lilly and Novartis Pharmaceuticals.
