US ill-prepared to recover the Internet

The US is ill-prepared for a catastrophe, with significant ambiguities in public and private sector responses that would be needed to restore and recover the following a , according to a new Business Roundtable report released last week.

The report, "Essential steps to strengthen America`s cyber terrorism preparedness: New priorities and commitments", highlights three significant gaps in response plans to restore the Internet: an inadequate early warning system, unclear and overlapping responsibilities and insufficient resources.

The report concludes that the US is not sufficiently prepared for a major attack, software incident or natural disaster that would lead to disruption of large parts of the Internet, reports Continuity Central.

Financial institution external attacks surge

The world`s largest financial institutions have reported an increase in the number of security attacks over the past year, reports Irish Dev.

More than three-quarters of respondents to Deloitte`s 2006 Global Security Survey (78%, up from 26% in 2005), confirm a security breach from outside the organisation and almost half (49%, up from 35% in 2005) experienced at least one internal breach.

The research found evidence of the financial sector taking steps to fend-off the increasing threats. This year, fighting identity theft and account fraud (58%), along with identity management (41%), made it into the top five security initiatives for 2006.
