US unveils E-Verify Self Check

UPI.

The system gives users the chance to correct inaccuracies in their Homeland or Social Security records before applying for jobs, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) says

E-Verify Self Check allows workers to better protect themselves from potential workplace discrimination that may arise from an employer's abusing the E-Verify system, it adds.

According to Fox News, the Homeland Security secretary, Janet Napolitano, says E-Verify is a smart, simple, and effective tool for employers to help them maintain a legal workforce.

Napolitano says illegal immigration in the US is chiefly a problem of supply and demand on the labour market, but that the government is committed to stopping undocumented immigrants from being hired.

E-Verify Self Check is a "voluntary, free, fast and secure service" that gives users the opportunity to submit corrections of any inaccuracies in their Homeland Security and Social Security Administration records before seeking employment, DHS states.

However, people living in California may have to wait until April 2012 to use the federal government's new Web site that allows users to check on their own employment eligibility, says LA Weekly.

A spokeswoman from the US Citizenship and Immigration Services says there is no set timetable for when people in California will be able use the service, but that it should be within the next 12 months.
