UUNET SA customers in Cape Town have experienced a significant improvement in their Internet experience during the past month, specifically on all international traffic.
The organisation recently upgraded its fibre infrastructure to an additional 45Mbps (DS3) on the existing 90Mbps, making UUNET one of the select service providers in the region with this amount of global Internet capacity to the corporate market. The new DS3 fibre network circuit runs from Miami, USA, directly to Cape Town, as opposed to the existing fibre circuits that run from Miami, USA, to Johannesburg.
"While we are pleased to bring our customers increased international bandwidth capabilities through our new bi-directional fibre circuit, what this network infrastructure will bring is the ability for us to host and run true business applications across our network both locally and globally, and move beyond mere Internet provision for our customers," says James Bayheck, Western Cape Regional Sale Manager at UUNET SA. "UUNET has developed a number of value-added solutions over the past year and this upgrade truly cements our position as a network service provider that has the ability to drive business innovation.
"The Internet has certainly progressed from the mere information gathering tool it has been viewed as during its 10 years of existence in SA. The evolution of this concept has mainly been driven by service providers who have understood that the Internet is becoming more embedded in our lives. UUNET has realised the necessity of understanding the Internet as a communication and essential business tool and has utilised its capabilities to build effective and efficient business processes, changing the way Africa communicates," adds Bayheck.
The UUNET global IP network is the largest global carrier of Internet traffic carrying over 50% of the world`s Internet traffic. Additionally, to ensure reliability UUNET operates a 24-hour Network Operations Centre (NOC) in Cape Town and a 24-hour Customer Service Centre (CSC) in Johannesburg to provide proactive network monitoring and reactive fault resolution - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
"This upgrade, coupled with our approach to service excellence, will ensure that we not only deliver market-driving solutions to our customers, but also a network with the redundancy, efficiency and reliability that these solutions require," concludes Bayheck.
UUNET SA, an MCI company, is southern Africa`s only pan-African provider of Internet-based network solutions and is the largest global carrier of Internet traffic. The company provides Internet connectivity and corporate network solutions to major corporations as well as access services to Internet service providers.
