UUNET Internet Africa and Cisco team to offer advanced networking solutions

With a Cisco Powered Network, UUNET Internet Africa offers customers reliable, secure and high-performance Internet services
Johannesburg, 18 Feb 1998

UUNET Internet Africa today announced that it has earned a Cisco Powered Network designation from Cisco Systems, worldwide leader in networking for the Internet. UUNET Internet Africa is the first ISP in South Africa to receive this designation. With a Cisco Powered Network, UUNET Internet Africa offers customers reliable, secure and high-performance Internet services. The relationship highlights UUNET Internet Africa`s and Cisco`s use of intelligent broadband Internet Protocol networking to deliver enhanced connectivity and network-based applications to Internet users in South Africa. Edwin Thompson, Operations Director at UUNET Internet Africa, indicated that the Cisco Powered Network programme is important to the company, as it reflects its preferred use of best-of-breed Cisco routing products. "We use Cisco products exclusively in our national routed backbone network, as well as recommending the products to corporate customers needing routers for leased line and ISDN access. The programme enables us to enter into a prestigious co-marketing campaign with one of our key suppliers," said Thompson. UUNET Internet Africa offers a complete range of Internet access options to consumers, small and home office as well as corporate customers. Data access rates range from dial-up modem speeds through to 64 kbps, 128 kbps and greater. UUNET Internet Africa`s national backbone infrastructure is routed using Cisco 7500 series equipment, and customers are typically encouraged to purchase Cisco routing equipment to guarantee seamless integration into UUNET Internet Africa`s national network, which features more than 20 access points in the southern African region. "Cisco`s high-performance, reliable networking solutions enable service providers to offer consistent services," said Garth Braithwaite, corporate account manager, Cisco South Africa. "UUNET Internet Africa`s close relationship with Cisco enables our companies to work together to enhance network interoperability and performance while simultaneously delivering new, advanced and differentiated services." In the Cisco Powered Network programme UUNET Internet Africa will provide services based predominantly on Cisco equipment and software. UUNET Internet Africa`s participation in the programme - including the use of the Cisco Powered Network logo to brand its services and marketing support materials - demonstrates UUNET Internet Africa`s ability to provide innovative services and industry-leading technology solutions.
