UUNET Namibia, a WorldCom company, has recently completed a two-fold technology solution for the Windhoek City Council. The solution included increased bandwidth, a virtual private network (VPN) and a secure remote dial network solution, which will ensure that both the Windhoek City Council and its customer Nampost deliver mobile solutions to the market.
The first part of the solution, involved UUNET SA delivering a dedicated VPN line between the Windhoek City Council and Nampost. The line enables Nampost customers to pay for their prepaid electricity accounts online, without having to pay over the counter or through the coin-machines. This streamlined process means a decrease in administrative costs and increased efficiency in customer service offerings.
Additionally, the Windhoek City Council wanted to realise true empowerment of the mobile workforce. Therefore UUNET Namibia implemented a secure remote dial network to enable city council employees to dial into the existing VPN, from anywhere and have complete access to the necessary information, as if they were sitting at their desk. To ensure that the highest security is maintained, the remote dial network includes password and user name protection and complete firewall protection.
"Organisations are being driven by speed and customer satisfaction, both of which are driving demand for increased bandwidth capacity and mobility," says Werner Lassen, at UUNET Namibia. "A VPN enables companies to use the public Internet to deliver private information securely between internal offices and business partners, suppliers and vendors. A VPN is especially effective for employees who need secure, private access to corporate data while working remotely in branch offices, at home, or on the road. Frequently, companies use a VPN to share critical information at great distances."
"The Windhoek City Council knows firsthand the benefits of a VPN with regards to connecting our branch offices, business partners, suppliers, vendors - even employees. UUNET Namibia is a recognised market leader in the VPN market, offering a suite of fully-managed, high-performance VPNs that include remote access dial and dedicated services," says Dieter Steinbach from Windhoek City Council.
UUNET Namibia, a WorldCom company, is Southern Africa`s only pan-African provider of Internet-based network services and the largest global carrier of Internet traffic in Africa. The company provides Internet connectivity and corporate network services to major corporations as well as access services to Internet service providers.
