UUNET SA gives customers bandwidth management control

UUNET SA, in its effort to address the need for organisations to correctly manage their bandwidth due to the direct impact it has on employee productivity, has recently launched a bandwidth management solution, to ensure customers gain optimal control over their bandwidth utilisation.

"Bandwidth is a necessary service in today`s business environment," says Mike Bruyns-Haylett, access product manager at UUNET SA. "The increasing number of software applications and users, as well as the rising levels of inappropriate Internet usage by internal employees, has meant that strain is placed on corporate networks, which has in turn impacted the productivity and efficiency originally promised through the Internet."

While to date most organisations have addressed their bandwidth problems by simply purchasing additional bandwidth, this does not always correctly address network congestion and improve response times or employee productivity, especially if there is no control on how the bandwidth is being utilised.

"As a result of these increasing market demands, UUNET SA has, through its partnership with Xon, developed a bandwidth management solution that will ensure companies are able to optimise their existing bandwidth and receive the most favourable return on their investment," adds Bruyns-Haylett.

UUNET SA and Xon, a local organisation that has expertise in bandwidth management tools, have worked together on the creation of solutions that are focused on delivering real cost-savings, increasing productivity and giving control to a company. "We chose to collaborate with Xon on this new solution, as they not only have the requisite skills and national coverage capabilities, but their solution set is complementary to our business direction and vision," says Bruyns-Haylett.

UUNET`s bandwidth management includes five key features, namely:

* Allocation of fixed bandwidth to business-critical applications;

* Prioritisation of different types of Internet traffic to maintain network performance during high usage periods;

* Restriction of non-work related applications that congests networks;

* Bandwidth audits and analysis of historical bandwidth data; and

* Allocation of fixed amounts of bandwidth across an organisation`s cost centres.

"The UUNET bandwidth management solution not only optimises an organisation`s existing bandwidth, while reducing the need to purchase additional bandwidth, but has the ability to improve response times and block inappropriate usage," says Thomas Lee at Xon.

"The Internet has become a business-critical tool for most companies and Internet misuse could affect the overall success of a company. To ensure that organisations get maximum benefit for the money spent on Internet connectivity, companies need to examine how their bandwidth is being managed."
