UUNET SA has opted for Telkom`s ATM Express, greatly increasing the bandwidth between the company`s hubs in the major centres of SA and upgrading the network`s reliability. Telkom welcomes UUNET SA`s decision as it endorses the long-standing and mutually beneficial business relationship. UUNET SA is currently the biggest user of Telkom ATM services in SA.
ATM Express is Telkom`s digital transmission service for wide area networks providing speeds from 2Mbps up to 155Mbps. The service provides a medium for companies to transmit high volumes of virtually error-free information at high speeds over their wide area nNetwork with high quality and reliable connections.
UUNET SA now carries its data on 155Mbps circuits in a closed user network configuration. This provides the flexibility to reconfigure the bandwidth of any designated circuit at short notice.
All major UUNET SA sites have dual optic fibre entries that provide full redundancy. The network is monitored on a 24x7 basis from Telkom`s National Network Operations Centre in Centurion with full management ability through the ATM nodes housed on the UUNET SA sites. UUNET SA has opted for a Telkom Gold Service Level Agreement, which offers a contracted 99.5% up time. The value of the UUNET SA contract is R165 million over 38 months.
UUNET SA`s order underlines the close cooperation between the two companies, enhancing service delivery to UUNET SA customers.
"Bandwidth availability is not a problem in SA," said Wally Beelders, Managing Executive for Telkom International and Specialised Market Services. "Deployment of DWDM (Digital Wave Division Multiplex) on our fibre network some two years ago has provided us with the capability of rolling out the ATM network nationally. We can meet all International bandwidth demands through recently deployed SAT3/WASC/Safe Submarine cable linking SA with countries in West Africa, Europe and the East."
Telkom is working with UUNET SA on the deployment of a total of 155Mbps, international capacity on SAT3, on a long-term contract. The target date for implementation of this service is 31 October.
