UUNET SA to drive African advancement at Internet Week

By Orange Ink
Johannesburg, 16 Sept 2003

Tuesday, 16 September 2003 marks the commencement of Internet Week in SA. For four days, industry leaders will gather together to highlight their profound commitment to discussing the many opportunities and challenges facing the Internet, its development and more importantly the way in which it can and will change the way that Africa operates. The issues to be discussed will range from the legal, regulatory and the proposed convergence bill through to the many mobile/wireless opportunities.

One of these industry leaders is UUNET SA, which is associated with Internet Week through a sponsorship initiative of the conference, and commitment and contribution of its people to the objectives of the Internet Service Providers` Association (ISPA).

"At UUNET SA we believe that undertakings of this nature are essential to the development of the Internet in SA and of course, the rest of the continent," says Edwin Thompson, regulatory director of UUNET SA.

Thompson continues: "Through such a combined industry effort, we believe Internet Week will bring with it many paths of clear direction for the sectors growth and continued development in SA. UUNET SA is now 10 years old and as the pioneer of this industry, believe that we can not only help foster debate and discussion but also bring a wealth of experience to the conference.

"One of our focus areas will be the growth and advancement of Africa, to ensure the continent continues to embrace technological advancements to build its confidence, thought processes and solutions. UUNET has not only seen the opportunities that have existed since our inception, but also understands the requirements of each region that we currently operate within - these being SA, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Kenya and more recently Nigeria - and therefore we hope to champion this understanding further during Internet Week."

Internet Week will be held at the Pharmaceutical Society conference centre in Lower Houghton, Johannesburg, from 16 to 19 September 2003.
