UUNET UK has deployed Cisco12008 GSRs to build an advanced, resilient and highly scalable network that will increase bandwidth availability to customers and that allows UUNET UK to introduce next-generation services IP services as they become available. Next-generation IP services are Web based, network enabled and allow customers greater control through an enhanced networking experience.
Initially UUNET UK will deploy the new switch routers within the areas of greatest bandwidth usage, including connections to UUNET's global backbone and to its new high-speed Co-locate backbone-access facility in the city of London. Customers will benefit from quicker, more reliable IP service as a result.
The growth in demand for T3 leased-line connections was an additional factor in UUNET`s decision to increase bandwidth capability along its network backbone. Efficient line rate forwarding features within the 12000 GSRs also will enable UUNET UK to take full advantage of SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) technology, giving customers even more flexibility and traffic speed across truly multi-media networks.
"The Cisco12000 series routers give us the opportunity for more seamless growth in the future, as our customers needs evolve," said Steven Hagger, Head of Network Engineering for UUNET UK. "The UK Internet service marketplace is increasingly competitive, so this latest deployment of Cisco technology will enable us to ensure our customers get a quick, reliable service with dependable global connection. Customer satisfaction is what long-term ISP success is all about."
"The 12000 GSR represents a new generation of technology, combining the speed of switching with the intelligence of routing," said John Doyle, European product marketing manager. "This deployment will allow UUNET UK to gain the benefits of large-scale IP network operation, including high-performance congestion avoidance and queue management capability, and scaleable bandwidth. As a result, UUNET UK will have a first-class IP forwarding and services platform that will keep the company at the forefront of telecommunications industry."
Cisco designed the 12000 gigabit switch router to deliver Internet routing and switching at gigabit speeds. Cisco 12000 GSR provides scalable IP forwarding and services performance in a carrier-class platform, enabling high-speed IP backbones to scale to OC-12 (622 Mbps) and OC-48 (2.4 Gbps). Future GSR technology will support OC-192 (9.6 Gbps). With extensive redundancy and carrier-compliant equipment standards, the Cisco 12000 series is specifically designed to provide the high availability required by high-speed service provider backbones.
