UUNET Zambia, which has been in successful operation for two years, has recently appointed Rienzo Colpo as its general manager (GM) to further expand and entrench its business solutions on offer to this market.

"Colpo is viewed as a strategic and invaluable member of the UUNET team, having derived his expertise in management and business development over the last decade," says Guy Clarke, African Director at UUNET.

Colpo joined UUNET in 2000 after completing a number of his own successful business ventures and for the last three years he has held the position of regional sales manager in UUNET`s KwaZulu-Natal branch.

"This hands-on experience, coupled with his commitment to changing the way that Africa communicates, made Colpo the obvious choice for Zambia`s general manager position," says Clarke.

Colpo will be responsible for and oversee all aspects of UUNET`s business operations within the Zambian market. These responsibilities range from business development through to customer service, technical operations and especially the financial performance of the business.

"The growing success of the Zambian market required a dedicated GM resource with a proven UUNET track record. Colpo`s experience together with the very resourceful and focused Zambian management team will derive the growth expected from the Zambian Internet economy going forward," says Clarke.

"I am honoured and excited to be given this opportunity," says Colpo. "To date, the Zambian team have shown such a high degree of dedication and have developed a very strong presence within the country. I hope to further compliment their efforts both internally and externally to ensure the growth of UUNET Zambia through people development, solution innovation and service excellence to customers."

UUNET Zambia has a 20% market share and operates in the corporate and consumer markets. "We are encouraged by the Zambian economy and ICT adoption and development in the country and we expect sustained growth in 2004. We will ensure development and implementation of Internet business solutions to ensure that Africa becomes a continent that can compete with the technologies of the rest of the world," concludes Clarke.

UUNET Zambia, an MCI company, is part of southern Africa`s only pan-African provider of Internet-based network services and the largest global carrier of Internet traffic in Africa. The company provides Internet connectivity and corporate network services to major corporations as well as access services to Internet service providers.
