A problem at MCI`s base in Miami, Florida, affected local Internet traffic for several hours this morning, says UUNET.
MCI experienced a hardware problem on one of its router interfaces this morning, which affected South African traffic that was routing to the US, confirms UUNET spokesperson Kerryn-Leigh Anderson. She says the problem has since been resolved.
An e-mail notice circulated by UUNET earlier today states: "Currently there is wide-scale maintenance occurring across the North American network."
The e-mail describes the intermittent "degradation in service" as "unscheduled maintenance", classifying its severity as "major".
Maintenance was expected to run from 7am to noon South African Standard Time, the mail says.
UUNET SA says the majority of its international connectivity is sourced from the US and transmitted to SA over direct circuits between SA and the US.
Two UUNET SA DS3 fibre circuits run to Miami, and a third runs to New York.
